The next day was sponsorship day. Voice of Compassion (VOC) has a child sponsorship program. We got the sponsored children together and had them write letters to their sponsors. Then later with translators we translated the letters. We also took profiles and pictures of 10 more students to someday be sponsored.
Friday we took two suitcases full of clothing, shoes, toothbrushes, toothpaste and much more out to De Monge (The church Lavaud's father started & where Lavaud grew up). We did out puppet skits for the kids and adults. I can only say it was pure joy to bring them some entertainment and GOD's message and a little candy as well. Friday evening we met with the women's group, we blessed the women with baked goods and juice and some personal care items. We also did the limbo with them and some other games. Saturday I worked with Lavaud a little. I am now his International Secretary. I will be in contact with him every 6 weeks or so and typing up his newsletters for the ministries supporting him here in the states. It was also the day of the baptism. 4 men and 8 women were baptized. They were dressed in white head to toe. While they were being baptized people around the pool sang hymns.
Also that night was the first service that they held in the new church construction. That day they finished putting up trusses and tarps for the ceiling.
Sunday morning started with over a 5 hr church service. It was very hot to say the least. They handed out bags of water to everyone. 5 choirs took turns singing. Other than it being really long I thoroughly enjoyed it. That afternoon we went to the feeding center. It is a catholic run organization that takes in sick or starved children and nurses them back to life and then gives them back to their parents. We did our puppets for hundreds of kids that afternoon and gave the nuns candy to share with them later. When we got back to the school we did the limbo and chicken dance and the bunny hop and so much more with all to the kids in the court yard. After that we played a little volleyball just for fun.
During the week we also bought goats and gave them to some of the sponsored students and people from the church. We had church services every night and listened to special choirs.
When I reflect on the week I think of joy. In a place so focused on sheer survival, I think we brought them not only words of salvation but simple joy. Puppets singing, a little candy and a bright smile and effort to communicate in their language. I am truly blessed to be a part of GOD's ministry.
